About Darrel Chaney

After the 1972 season Reds general manager Bob Howsam said he believed Chaney's future in the major leagues was "limited to the role of a utilityman." Dave Concepcion's broken leg in July 1973 made Chaney a regular for the last eight weeks. He finished at .181 in 227 at-bats and stopped switch-hitting late in the year, batting only left-handed for a couple of years. His 1973 Topps card is #507, a fourth-series number, with the Reds.

Darrel Chaney was a switch-hitting shortstop who spent 11 major-league seasons, 1969 through 1979, mostly with the Cincinnati Reds. Drafted by the Reds in the second round in 1966, he broke through with 23 home runs at Double-A Asheville in 1968 before reaching the majors the next spring. From 1970 he was mostly a utility infielder, filling in at short, second and third for the Big Red Machine teams that won three pennants and the 1975 World Series. He was traded to the Atlanta Braves in December 1975 for Mike Lum and got a full season as the Braves' regular shortstop in 1976 before returning to utility work through 1979. He finished his career with a .217 average, 14 home runs and 190 RBI in 915 games. After his playing days ended he became a Braves television and radio broadcaster alongside Ernie Johnson, Skip Caray and Pete Van Wieren, and later worked in business and as a motivational speaker.
