About Dave Concepcion

Card #554 is a Cincinnati Reds card and a high number from the fifth series. Dave Concepcion played 89 games in 1973 and hit .287 with 8 home runs and 46 RBI. He earned his first All-Star selection and hit a ninth-inning homer on May 9 that beat the Phillies 9-7. A broken left leg suffered sliding into third base on July 22 ended his season, and the Reds lost the NLCS to the Mets.

Dave Concepcion was the Cincinnati Reds' shortstop through the Big Red Machine years and played all 19 of his seasons, 1970 to 1988, in a Reds uniform. Born in Ocumare de la Costa, Venezuela, he worked as a bank teller before scout Wilfredo Calvino signed him in 1967, and he reached Cincinnati in April 1970 at 21, listed at 6 feet 2 and 155 pounds. He became the regular shortstop in 1973 and was named to nine National League All-Star teams between 1973 and 1982. He won five Gold Gloves, four in a row from 1974 to 1977 and a fifth in 1979, and two Silver Sluggers. He paired with Joe Morgan up the middle on the Reds teams that won the 1975 and 1976 World Series. At Riverfront Stadium he perfected a one-bounce throw to first off the artificial turf. In the 1982 All-Star Game in Montreal he homered off Dennis Eckersley and was named the game's MVP. He finished with 2,326 hits, 101 home runs and 321 stolen bases, moving to second and first base late in his career as Barry Larkin took over at short. Cincinnati inducted him into the Reds Hall of Fame in 2000 and retired his number 13 on August 25, 2007. He is a member of the Caribbean Series Hall of Fame.
