About Eddie Fisher

Fisher went 4-6 with a 3.91 ERA in 49 games in 1972, and four of his six appearances for Chicago that year were starts. Card #439, from the fourth series of the 1973 Topps set, pictures him with the White Sox. Paired with fellow knuckleballer Wilbur Wood, he started 16 of his 26 White Sox games in 1973 before the Cardinals bought his contract on August 29.

Eddie Gene Fisher (1936-2025) was a right-handed knuckleball pitcher, born in Shreveport, Louisiana and raised in southwestern Oklahoma, where he pitched Friendship High School to a 1954 state championship before starring at the University of Oklahoma. He signed with the San Francisco Giants and reached the majors on June 22, 1959. Across fifteen big-league seasons he worked for the Giants, Chicago White Sox, Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians, California Angels and St. Louis Cardinals. After Chicago acquired the great knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm in January 1963, Fisher came under his tutelage, and manager Al Lopez reckoned that by 1965 his pupil was throwing the pitch about 85 percent of the time. Fisher made the American League All-Star team in 1965 and won a World Series ring with the 1966 Orioles without appearing in the Series. He finished in 1973 with an 85-70 record, 81 saves and a 3.41 ERA. He appeared in 690 games, and at retirement he was the American League's all-time leader in relief appearances. He was inducted into the University of Oklahoma Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007 and the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.
