Lonnett coached third base and catchers for the 1972 White Sox under Chuck Tanner, a teammate on a 1957 Pennsylvania barnstorming team. Mahoney coached under manager Chuck Tanner on the 1973 Chicago White Sox staff. Topps put him on #356, the manager card for the club, where he shares the front with Tanner, Joe Lonnett, Alex Monchak and Johnny Sain, each printed with the White Sox. The card sits in the third series of the 1973 set. Shortstop Jim Mahoney played 120 games for the Red Sox, Senators, Indians and Astros between 1959 and 1965, hitting .229. Alex Monchak played 19 games for the 1940 Phillies, then managed in the minors and coached for Chuck Tanner with the White Sox, Athletics, Pirates and Braves, including the 1979 World Series champion Pirates.

During the 1971 season Sain went to White Sox manager Chuck Tanner with a plan to start Wilbur Wood regularly on short rest, and Tanner agreed.
