About this card

A Rookie Prospects card is a rookie card for the players on it who had no earlier Topps flagship card - on #601, #603, #604, #605 and #608 one of the four had already appeared on one, and the rookie-card answer on each card names the players it counts for.

The story on this card

Garland opened 1974 at Rochester with a no-hitter at Charleston on April 20, was recalled in late May, and went 5-5 with a 2.97 ERA in 20 games. On July 15 he held Oakland hitless until Dick Green singled to lead off the ninth, and took the loss. He pitched two-thirds of an inning in the ALCS. Card #596 is his rookie card, shared with Fred Holdsworth (Tigers), Mark Littell (Royals) and Dick Pole (Red Sox); he is printed with the Orioles. Wayne Garland won 20 games for the 1976 Orioles and then signed the first 10-year contract in major league history with Cleveland. A torn rotator cuff shortened his career, which ended in 1981 at 55-66 with a 3.89 ERA.

Holdsworth started two of his five appearances for the 1973 Tigers and posted a 6.75 ERA. In 1974 he went 0-3 with a 4.29 ERA in eight games for Detroit. His rookie card is #596, a four-player Rookie Prospects card printed with Detroit; Wayne Garland (Baltimore), Mark Littell (Kansas City) and Dick Pole (Boston) share it, and it is a rookie card for all four. Right-handed pitcher who debuted with the Tigers in 1972 as the youngest player in the American League, then pitched for the Orioles, Expos and Brewers through 1980. He later became an accountant and a finance vice president at Comcast Cable.

Card #596 is a Rookie Prospects card shared by four pitchers: Wayne Garland of the Orioles, Fred Holdsworth of the Tigers, Mark Littell of the Royals and Dick Pole of the Red Sox, each in his first Topps appearance. Littell had debuted June 14, 1973, going 1-3 with a 5.68 ERA in eight games, and he spent the 1974 season in the minor leagues after being named pitcher of the year in the American Association in 1973. Right-handed reliever for the Royals and Cardinals, Mark Littell closed for Kansas City's 1976 division winner with 16 saves and a 2.08 ERA, then pitched for St. Louis until elbow bone spurs ended his career in 1982.

Pole came up from Pawtucket in late June 1974 when Rick Wise went on the disabled list, returned to the minors after July 13, and came back in September. On September 8 he pitched seven innings behind Juan Marichal's early exit and earned the win over Milwaukee, and he finished 1-1 with a 4.20 ERA and one save. His rookie card is #596, a four-man Rookie Prospects card shared with Wayne Garland (Orioles), Fred Holdsworth (Tigers) and Mark Littell (Royals). Right-hander for the Red Sox and the first Seattle Mariners, 1973-78, who went 25-37 with a 5.05 ERA. A line drive broke his face in 1975; he later coached pitchers for the Cubs, Giants, Indians, Expos and Reds.
