About this card

Cards #596-608 are the thirteen four-player Rookie Prospects cards, each titled by position. A Rookie Prospects card is a rookie card for the players on it who had no earlier Topps flagship card - on #601, #603, #604, #605 and #608 one of the four had already appeared on one, and the rookie-card answer on each card names the players it counts for.

The story on this card

Abbott came to the 1974 set after five games for Oakland in 1973, in which he went 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA. His 1974 Topps #602 is a Rookie Prospects card shared with Rick Henninger of the Rangers, Craig Swan of the Mets and Dan Vossler of the Twins, and it is the rookie card for all four. Abbott is printed with the Athletics. Right-hander Glenn Abbott pitched for Oakland, Seattle and Detroit from 1973 to 1984, going 62-83 with a 4.39 ERA. He threw an inning in the 1975 four-pitcher no-hitter and won 12 games for the Mariners in 1977 and 1980.

Henninger pitched in six games for the 1973 Rangers, two of them starts, and finished 1-0. Over 23 innings he posted a 2.74 ERA with 6 strikeouts. He faced the Chicago White Sox in his debut. Card #602 puts him in the Rookie Prospects group with Glenn Abbott of the Oakland Athletics, Craig Swan of the New York Mets and Dan Vossler of the Minnesota Twins; it is a rookie card for each of the four men. Rick Henninger was a 6-foot-6 right-hander from Hastings, Nebraska, who pitched for the Texas Rangers in 1973. A 1968 secondary-phase pick of the Washington Senators out of Missouri, he was the first Missouri Tigers draftee to reach the majors.

Swan opened 1974 on the Mets roster after dropping from 246 pounds to 225; at the heavier weight he had earned the nickname Baby Huey. A sore right elbow in May put him on the disabled list in early June, and he went back to Tidewater with a 1-3 record. An X-ray at the end of the year found a break in the elbow that had been there all season. His rookie card is #602, a four-man Rookie Prospects card shared with Glenn Abbott of the Athletics, Rick Henninger of the Rangers and Dan Vossler of the Twins. Craig Swan was a right-hander who took the 1978 National League ERA title for a last-place Mets club and later returned from a torn rotator cuff. He pitched in New York from 1973 until the spring of 1984.

With Triple-A Tacoma in 1973, Vossler went 6-10 with a 3.96 ERA. He struck out 95 batters in 159 innings. His rookie card, 1974 Topps #602, placed him in the four-player Rookie Prospects subset with Minnesota. The other pitchers represented three different clubs: Glenn Abbott with the Oakland Athletics, Rick Henninger with the Texas Rangers and Craig Swan with the New York Mets. Dan Vossler pitched in Minnesota's farm system from 1970 through 1974. The 6-foot-6 right-hander advanced from St. Cloud to Tacoma and recorded a 2.11 ERA at Double-A Charlotte in 1972.
