About this card

Cards #331-339 are the nine All-Star cards, each pairing an American League and a National League player at one position, from the catchers (Carlton Fisk and Johnny Bench, #331) to the pitchers (Jim Hunter and Rick Wise, #339). Their backs form a picture of Bobby Bonds, the previous season's All-Star Game MVP.

The story on this card

Topps paired its 1973 catchers on #331, the first card of the nine-card All-Stars subset (#331-339). Carlton Fisk is printed with the Boston Red Sox and Johnny Bench with the Cincinnati Reds. Fisk made the American League All-Star team in both 1972 and 1973, while Bench hit 25 home runs and drove in 104 runs in 1973 as the Reds won 99 games, the most in baseball. The backs of the All-Stars cards carry no statistics and instead join into a picture puzzle of Bobby Bonds, the 1973 All-Star Game MVP.

Carlton Fisk - Red Sox and White Sox catcher from 1969 to 1993, the first unanimous American League Rookie of the Year and an 11-time All-Star. His 12th-inning home run won Game 6 of the 1975 World Series. Hall of Fame, 2000. Johnny Bench spent his entire 17-season career with Cincinnati. The catcher won two National League MVP awards and ten straight Gold Gloves, played on two World Series winners and entered the Hall of Fame in 1989.
