About this card

A Rookie Prospects card is a rookie card for the players on it who had no earlier Topps flagship card - on #590, #593, #597 and #598 one of the four had already appeared on one, and the rookie-card answer on each card names the players it counts for.

The story on this card

Cruz was the Cardinals' regular third baseman in 1976 and played 148 games there. He hit .228 with 13 home runs and 71 RBIs. His 26 errors led the league's third basemen. His card is #598, a four-player Rookie Prospects card shared with Jamie Quirk (Royals), Jerry Turner (Padres) and Joe Wallis (Cubs), and it is the rookie card for Cruz, Quirk and Wallis. Cruz is printed with the Cardinals. Hector Cruz was a Puerto Rican third baseman and outfielder who played for the Cardinals, Cubs, Giants and Reds from 1973 to 1982, hitting .225 with 39 home runs. Brother of Jose and Tommy Cruz, he entered the Caribbean Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007.

Quirk played 64 games for the 1976 Royals, hitting .246 with 15 RBI while filling in at shortstop and third base. He went 1-for-7 in Kansas City's five-game ALCS loss to the Yankees. Card #598 groups him with Hector Cruz of the Cardinals, Jerry Turner of the Padres and Joe Wallis of the Cubs, and is his rookie card. Jamie Quirk played 18 seasons from 1975 to 1992, mainly as a catcher for Kansas City and Oakland, was on the 1985 World Series champion Royals, and later coached for the Royals, Rangers, Rockies, Astros and Cubs.

Turner's first full season came in 1976, when he played 105 games for San Diego, 74 of them in the outfield, and batted .267. He added five home runs and 12 stolen bases. Topps gave him #598, a four-player Rookie Prospects card printed with Hector Cruz of the Cardinals, Jamie Quirk of the Royals and Joe Wallis of the Cubs, with Turner listed with the Padres. Left-handed outfielder who spent most of 1974 to 1983 with the San Diego Padres, their regular left fielder in 1976 and 1979. He also played for the White Sox and Tigers and finished with 45 home runs in 733 games.

Joe Wallis's two-out single to right in the ninth inning on September 24, 1975, broke up Tom Seaver's no-hit bid; the Cubs won 1-0 in eleven innings over the Mets at Wrigley Field. He appeared in 16 games that season and hit .286. His 1976 Topps card, #598, is a four-player Rookie Prospects card and his rookie card: Wallis represents the Cubs beside Hector Cruz of the Cardinals, Jamie Quirk of the Royals and Jerry Turner of the Padres. Joe Wallis was a switch-hitting center fielder from East St. Louis who hit .244 with 16 home runs in 329 games for the Cubs and Athletics from 1975 to 1979. He was nicknamed Tarzan for his cliff diving.
