About this card

Cards #589-599 are the eleven four-player Rookie Prospects cards. A Rookie Prospects card is a rookie card for the players on it who had no earlier Topps flagship card - on #590, #593, #597 and #598 one of the four had already appeared on one, and the rookie-card answer on each card names the players it counts for.

The story on this card

Dressler went 3-10 with a 4.43 ERA in 1976, starting 19 of his 25 games for the Giants. His #599 is a Rookie Prospects card shared with Ron Guidry of the Yankees, Bob McClure of the Royals and Pat Zachry of the Reds, and it is the rookie card for all four men. Rob Dressler was a Portland right-hander, a first-round Giants pick in 1972, who pitched for San Francisco, St. Louis and Seattle from 1975 to 1980 and finished 11-23 with a 4.17 ERA in 82 games.

Guidry pitched in seven games for the 1976 Yankees, going 0-0 with a 5.62 ERA, after the club sent him to Syracuse out of spring training and recalled him on May 20. He sat through 47 straight games without being used before another demotion on July 6. Card #599 is the four-man Rookie Prospects card, printed with Rob Dressler of the Giants, Bob McClure of the Royals and Pat Zachry of the Reds, and it is the rookie card for all four. Left-hander for the New York Yankees from 1975 to 1988 who went 25-3 with a 1.74 ERA and won the Cy Young Award in 1978. He finished 170-91, won five Gold Gloves, and had his number 49 retired in 2003.

Four rookies share #599: Ron Guidry with the Yankees, Rob Dressler with the Giants, Pat Zachry with the Reds, and McClure with the Royals. McClure had debuted in August 1975 and won his first game by working six scoreless innings against Texas. In 1976 he spent most of the year at Triple-A Omaha and threw 4 innings in 8 games for Kansas City, with a 9.00 ERA. Left-handed pitcher for the Royals, Brewers, Expos, Mets, Angels, Cardinals and Marlins from 1975 to 1993. He went 12-7 as a Brewers starter in 1982, saved two World Series games that fall, and finished 68-57 with 52 saves and a 3.81 ERA.

Zachry spent 1975 in Triple-A, where he and teammate Santo Alcala ranked one-two in the American Association in ERA. After the 1975 season the Reds traded veterans Clay Carroll and Clay Kirby to clear room for him and Alcala. His 1976 Topps card, #599, is a four-player Rookie Prospects card, a rookie card for all four men: Rob Dressler of the Giants, Ron Guidry of the Yankees, Bob McClure of the Royals and Zachry of the Reds. It is among the key rookie cards of the set. Pat Zachry was a right-handed pitcher who shared the 1976 National League Rookie of the Year award with Butch Metzger while pitching for the Reds, came to the Mets in the 1977 trade for Tom Seaver, and finished 69-67 with a 3.52 ERA.
