About this card

Cards #472-479 and #487-494 are the sixteen four-player Rookie Prospects cards. A Rookie Prospects card is a rookie card for the players on it who had no earlier Topps flagship card - on #472, #473, #474, #475, #487, #489, #491 and #493 at least one of the four had already appeared on one, and the rookie-card answer on each card names the players it counts for.

The story on this card

Armas had played four September 1976 games for Pittsburgh when he went to Oakland on March 15, 1977, in a multiplayer trade that sent Phil Garner to the Pirates. He opened the season in right field and finished with 118 games, 13 homers and 53 RBI. His rookie card, #492, is a Rookie Prospects card printed with the Pirates, shared with Steve Kemp (Tigers), Carlos Lopez (Mariners) and Gary Woods (Blue Jays). Venezuelan outfielder Tony Armas hit 251 home runs from 1976 to 1989, tied for the American League lead in 1981 and led it in 1984 for Oakland and Boston, and drove in 123 runs in 1984. He was the first Venezuelan home run champion.

Kemp opened 1977 as Detroit's starting left fielder and hit 18 home runs with 88 RBIs in 151 games. He shares rookie card #492 with Tony Armas of Pittsburgh, Carlos Lopez of Seattle and Gary Woods of Toronto. The card identifies Kemp with the Tigers; Lopez had played for California and Woods for Oakland in 1976. Steve Kemp was a left-handed outfielder taken first overall in the January phase of the 1976 draft. He played for Detroit from 1977 to 1981, made the 1979 American League All-Star team, and later played for the White Sox, Yankees, Pirates and Rangers.

Seattle's first season in 1977 gave Lopez his first major league hit, against the Angels on April 10, and his first home run, against the Red Sox on May 3. On May 30 he homered twice in one game against the Rangers, part of a .283 season in 99 games. His rookie card is #492, a four-man Rookie Prospects card on which Tony Armas is printed with the Pirates, Steve Kemp with the Tigers, Lopez with the Mariners and Gary Woods with the Blue Jays. Carlos Lopez was a Mexican-born outfielder who played in the majors from 1976 to 1978 for the Angels, Mariners and Orioles. A right-handed hitter, he batted .260 with 23 stolen bases in 237 games.

After 6 games with Oakland in 1976, Woods moved to Toronto in the expansion draft. His 1977 Topps rookie card, #492, placed him with the Blue Jays alongside Pittsburgh's Tony Armas, Detroit's Steve Kemp and Seattle's Carlos Lopez in the Rookie Prospects subset. Gary Woods was a right-handed outfielder for Oakland, Toronto, Houston and the Cubs. After nine major league seasons, he worked as a White Sox scout and a Santa Barbara Foresters coach.
