1979 Topps #630 Bake McBride

About Bake McBride
On #630 McBride wears a Phillies uniform. He opened 1979 with trade talk because the club needed an extension to keep him past the year, then re-signed and played 151 games, the most of his career. He hit .280 with 12 home runs and 25 steals. The Phillies slid to fourth and Dallas Green replaced manager Danny Ozark in the last month.
Bake McBride was a left-handed hitting outfielder who won the 1974 National League Rookie of the Year Award with the St. Louis Cardinals and played for the 1980 world champion Philadelphia Phillies. The Cardinals took him in the 37th round of the 1970 draft after a tryout in which scouts timed him to first base and sent him to the outfield. He hit .299 over 11 seasons with 183 stolen bases, playing for the Cardinals, Phillies and Cleveland Indians from 1973 to 1983. Knee surgeries, shoulder trouble and a 1982 eye infection tied to contact lenses cut into several seasons. After he reached Philadelphia, Phillies fans nicknamed him Shake 'n Bake, and he hit a three-run home run in Game 1 of the 1980 World Series against Kansas City. After retiring he coached outfield and baserunning in the Mets' minor league system and later served as a Cardinals minor league hitting coach.
