About Jerry White

#494 is printed with the Cubs, who received White on June 23, 1978 to complete the June 9 deal that brought Woodie Fryman to Montreal. He batted .272 with a home run and 10 RBI in 59 games in Chicago. On December 14 he went back to the Expos with Rodney Scott for Sam Mejias. That winter he led the hitters at the 1979 Caribbean Series with a .522 average for Magallanes, then hit .297 in 88 games for Montreal.

Jerry White was a switch-hitting outfielder and pinch hitter who played 11 major league seasons, most of them with the Montreal Expos and with brief stops at the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals. Born in Shirley, Massachusetts, he grew up in California and was taken by the Expos out of Washington High School in San Francisco in the 14th round of the 1970 draft. He debuted on September 16, 1974, starting in center field at Jarry Park and going 0-for-2 in a 3-2 loss to the Mets. In the 1981 National League Championship Series he hit a three-run homer off Jerry Reuss in Game 3 and made the final out of Game 5. His major league line was .253 with 21 home runs and 57 stolen bases in 646 games, and his last appearance, on June 9, 1986, came against the Expos. He also played two seasons in Japan, for the Seibu Lions and the Yokohama Taiyo Whales, and was inducted into the Caribbean Baseball Hall of Fame in February 2006 for his contributions to the Caribbean Series. He joined the Minnesota Twins organization in 1987 as a roving hitting and outfield instructor, later coached first base for Detroit, and returned to Minnesota, where his first-base coaching tenure ended in October 2012.
