1979 Topps #56 John Hale

About John Hale
Hale's last big-league season, 1979, covered 54 games for Seattle, 42 of them in the outfield. He hit .222 with two home runs and seven RBI, and his final game came on August 1. His 1979 Topps card is #56 and lists him with Seattle.
John Hale was a left-handed-hitting outfielder who played in the majors from 1974 to 1979 with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Seattle Mariners. He attended Wasco Union High School in Wasco, California, then Cal State Bakersfield, and the Dodgers drafted him in the 14th round in 1971. His September 1974 call-up produced four hits in four at-bats, which set the record for most at-bats in a season at a perfect 1.000 average. One of those hits was the game-winning RBI on October 1 when Los Angeles clinched the National League West. The Toronto Blue Jays claimed him off waivers in September 1977, but he did not come to terms and signed with Seattle after the season. He played a career-high 107 games for the Mariners in 1978. His major-league career ended in 1979 with 14 home runs, 72 RBI and a .201 average. He spent two more seasons in the minors, leading Indianapolis in home runs and RBI in 1980.
