1979 Topps #337 John Montague

About John Montague
Montague's #337 shows him with Seattle after a 1978 in which he pitched 19 games, all in relief, and went 1-3 with a 6.18 ERA and two saves. He opened 1979 with the Mariners and was 6-4 with a save in 41 games when Seattle sent him to the Angels on August 29 for a player to be named later, Jim Anderson. He saved six games in 14 appearances for California and pitched in that October's ALCS against Baltimore.
John Montague was a right-handed reliever and spot starter who pitched in the majors from 1973 to 1980 for the Montreal Expos, Philadelphia Phillies, Seattle Mariners and California Angels. A Newport News, Virginia, native who played at Old Dominion, he was a third-round pick of the Baltimore Orioles in 1967 and reached Montreal after the Orioles traded him for Mickey Scott in April 1973. He debuted on September 9, 1973, retiring all three Mets he faced in the eighth inning of a 3-0 loss. Philadelphia claimed him on waivers in September 1975, and Seattle bought him from the Phillies in November 1976. He finished with a 24-26 record, a 4.76 ERA and 21 saves in 223 games. His last appearance came on August 28, 1980, when he gave up six runs in two innings of a 13-8 loss to Baltimore.
