1979 Topps #166 Leon Roberts

About Leon Roberts
Topps #166 pictures Roberts with Seattle, after a 1978 in which he led the Mariners with a .301 average, sixth in the American League, and hit 22 home runs with 92 RBI. The 1979 season brought 140 games and a .271 average with 15 home runs.
Leon Roberts was a right-handed corner outfielder who played 11 seasons, 1974 to 1984, for the Tigers, Astros, Mariners, Rangers, Blue Jays and Royals. A Michigan native from Vicksburg, he played baseball and basketball at the University of Michigan after being recruited for football by Bo Schembechler, and Detroit drafted him in the 10th round in 1972. He replaced Al Kaline in right field for the Tigers, then moved to Houston and on to Seattle. His best year came with the Mariners in 1978, when he set career highs in home runs and RBI. He was part of the 11-player trade that sent him from Seattle to Texas in December 1980, and he later moved through Toronto and Kansas City. Roberts pitched one inning for the Royals in 1984 and made his last appearance on September 30 of that year with a pinch-hit RBI single. He later disclosed that he had kept secret the poor eyesight left by a childhood accident. He hit .267 with 78 home runs in 901 games, then became a minor-league manager.
