1979 Topps #380 John Mayberry

About John Mayberry
Mayberry hit 22 home runs in 152 games for Toronto in 1978, its second American League season. Card #380 pictures him with the Blue Jays. He hit .274 in 1979, and in 1980 he reached his Toronto high of 30 home runs.
John Mayberry was a left-handed power-hitting first baseman who played 15 seasons for Houston, Kansas City, Toronto and the New York Yankees, hitting 255 home runs. The Astros took him sixth overall in the 1967 draft out of Detroit's Northwestern High School, where he also starred in basketball. Houston tried to turn him into a contact hitter, but in Kansas City he became a regular, with two All-Star selections and two Sporting News All-Star first-base honors. He fielded .994 at first base, and when he retired he held the Blue Jays' single-season home run record. He finished second in the 1975 MVP voting. He ended his career with the Yankees in 1982. The Royals inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 1996, and his son John Jr. later played in the majors.
