1979 Topps #639 Manny Trillo

About Manny Trillo
Trillo was traded to Philadelphia on February 23, 1979, in an eight-player deal, so card #639 still lists him with the Cubs. He hit .260 with 6 home runs in 118 games. When Dallas Green replaced Danny Ozark as manager on August 31, Trillo was reunited with his old minor league skipper.
Manny Trillo was a Venezuelan second baseman known for his strong throwing arm and his fielding. The Phillies signed him in 1968 as a catcher, and his first minor league manager, Dallas Green, moved him to the infield. Oakland took him in the 1969 Rule 5 draft and he debuted with the Athletics in 1973. Over 17 seasons with the Athletics, Cubs, Phillies, Indians, Expos, Giants and Reds he made four All-Star teams and won three Gold Gloves, in 1979, 1981 and 1982. With the 1980 Phillies he was the NLCS MVP and a member of the club's first World Series winner. In 1982 he handled 479 consecutive chances at second base without an error, a major league record at the time. He is in the Venezuelan Baseball Hall of Fame, inducted in 2007, and the Philadelphia Baseball Wall of Fame, added in 2020.
