About Ben Chapman
Ben Chapman signed with the New York Yankees in 1927 out of Nashville, Tennessee, and reached the majors in 1930. Converted from infielder to outfielder in 1931, his blazing speed earned him the nicknames "Dixie Flyer" and "Alabama Flash"; he led the American League in stolen bases three straight years (1931-33) and made four consecutive All-Star teams (1933-36). In the inaugural 1933 All-Star Game, Chapman led off for the AL and became the first American League batter in All-Star history. He was a key piece of the Yankees' 1932 World Series champions, hitting .294 in the sweep of the Cubs, and finished his 15-year career with a .302 average over 1,717 games. After his playing days he managed the Phillies (1945-48), a tenure overshadowed by his notorious racial abuse of Jackie Robinson in 1947. He is not enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
