About Walter Brown
Walter George Brown was born April 30, 1907, in Greene, Rhode Island, and discovered playing sandlot ball in Brockton, Massachusetts by Cubs manager Rabbit Maranville, who brought him to Chicago as a teenager. The right-hander debuted with the Cubs in 1925 and pitched through 1941 for the Cubs, Cleveland Indians, New York Yankees (1932-33 and 1935-36), New York Giants, and Cincinnati Reds. At 6-foot-4 and nearly 300 pounds, he was the heaviest player in the majors of his day, earning the nickname "Jumbo" (also "Walter the Whale" and "Big Bertha"); stubby fingers made it nearly impossible for him to throw a curveball. Used almost exclusively in relief -- only 23 starts in 249 career games -- Brown was part of baseball's first generation of bullpen specialists, leading the National League in saves in both 1940 and 1941 and once running off a 45-game undefeated streak, a Giants relief-pitching record. He finished 33-31 with a 4.07 ERA. This 1933 Goudey card catches him with the Yankees the year after he appeared on Babe Ruth's 1932 World Series championship roster (the "called shot" Series); he later made the 1937 pennant-winning Giants club as well, without pitching in either Series. After the war he worked at Grumman, ran a sporting-goods store in Freeport, New York, founded the town's Little League, and worked at Jones Beach until his death on October 2, 1966.
