About Pete Daley
Peter Harvey Daley (1930-2024) was a right-handed catcher signed out of a Grass Valley, California high school by Red Sox scout Charlie Wallgren in June 1948, then assigned to San Jose of the Class C California League. After a U.S. Army stint (1951-52) and years in the Boston farm system, he reached the majors on May 3, 1955, and spent seven big-league seasons: with the Red Sox (1955-59) as a backup to Sammy White, the Kansas City Athletics (1960), and the expansion Washington Senators (1961). This 1955 Topps card is his rookie card. Daley batted .239 with 259 hits, 18 home runs, and 120 RBI over 391 games, peaking at .267 in 1956. Curiously, both his career four-hit games fell on June 14 (a 4-for-5 in 1956, three hits off Hall of Famer Bob Lemon, and a 4-for-4 in 1959). No All-Star nods or nickname are documented.
