1957 Topps #399 Billy Consolo
About Billy Consolo
William Angelo "Billy" Consolo, born August 18, 1934, in Cleveland, Ohio, was a Los Angeles high-school phenom who signed with the Boston Red Sox in early 1953 as a bonus baby, reportedly for around $60,000. The bonus rule forced the team to keep the young shortstop on the major-league roster, and years of bench duty stunted his development. A middle infielder who also played third base, Consolo spent his Boston years (1953-1959) mostly in reserve, posting his best Red Sox campaign in 1957 when he hit .270 in 68 games-the season this Topps card captures. He later played for the Washington Senators, Minnesota Twins, Los Angeles Angels, Kansas City Athletics, and Philadelphia Phillies, retiring after 1962 with a .221 average, 260 hits, and 9 home runs over 603 games. Consolo found his greatest baseball success as a coach, joining Sparky Anderson's Detroit Tigers staff from 1979 to 1992 and serving as a trusted confidant on the 1984 World Series championship club. He died March 27, 2008, at age 73.
