About Bobby Thomson
Robert Brown Thomson (1923–2010), the "Staten Island Scot" — born in Glasgow, Scotland, and raised on Staten Island — signed with the Giants in 1942 for $100 a month, turning down a richer Dodgers offer because he was a Giants fan. A three-time All-Star (1948, 1949, 1952), he is immortal for one swing: the "Shot Heard 'Round the World," a three-run, ninth-inning homer off Brooklyn's Ralph Branca on October 3, 1951, that won the pennant playoff 5–4 as Russ Hodges shouted "The Giants win the pennant!" Traded to Milwaukee in the February 1954 Johnny Antonelli deal, he fractured his ankle that spring — opening the lineup spot rookie Hank Aaron seized. This card catches his final stretch as a Brave: on June 15, 1957, Milwaukee sent Thomson back to the Giants in the trade for Red Schoendienst. He retired in 1960 with 264 home runs, 1,026 RBIs, and a .270 average.
