About George Strickland
A slick-fielding New Orleans infielder, George "Bo" Strickland got his nickname as a boy when his grandmother's boss said he'd "never seen a little fella with so many bobos" — scrapes and scratches. He signed with the hometown Pelicans in 1943, spent 16 months in the Navy on Saipan, and debuted with Pittsburgh in 1950. Traded to Cleveland in August 1952, he hit a career-best .284 in 1953 while leading American League shortstops with 103 double plays, then anchored the 111-win 1954 pennant winners despite a broken jaw — struck by a throw at Yankee Stadium — that cost him more than a month. He went 0-for-9 in the Giants' World Series sweep. His .976 fielding percentage led AL shortstops in 1955, and after Chico Carrasquel took over short, this card captures his 1957 move to second base. A .224 hitter across ten seasons, Strickland later became the first New Orleans native to manage in the majors, twice guiding Cleveland as interim skipper.
