1957 Topps #264 Bob Turley

About Bob Turley
"Bullet Bob" Turley earned his nickname when Look magazine, using a bullet timer borrowed from Aberdeen Proving Grounds, clocked his fastball at 98 mph. Signed by the St. Louis Browns the day after his 1948 high-school graduation, he led the AL with 185 strikeouts for the 1954 Orioles, then landed in New York via baseball's biggest trade — a 17-player swap. With the Yankees from 1955 to 1962 he won World Series rings in 1956 and 1958, and this card catches him mid-transformation: after coach Jim Turner taught him a no-windup delivery late in 1956, Turley went 13-6 with a 2.71 ERA in 1957, the best control of his career. He peaked in 1958 — 21-7, the Cy Young Award by a single vote over Warren Spahn, the Hickok Belt, and World Series MVP after a 10-strikeout Game 5 shutout and shutout relief in Game 7 as New York erased a 3-1 deficit. A three-time All-Star, he finished 101-85, later co-founding the firm that became Primerica.
