About Eddie Mathews
Edwin Lee Mathews signed with the Boston Braves minutes after midnight following his 1949 high school graduation, and by 1953 — Milwaukee's first season — the 21-year-old third baseman led the National League with 47 home runs. The only man to play for the Braves in Boston, Milwaukee, and Atlanta, Mathews earned 12 All-Star selections, won home run titles in 1953 and 1959, and graced the cover of Sports Illustrated's first issue in 1954. This card captures him in 1957, when his 32 homers helped Milwaukee to the pennant and he delivered the World Series' signature moments: a 10th-inning walk-off homer off Bob Grim in Game 4 and the backhanded stop of Moose Skowron's grounder that ended Game 7 against the Yankees. He retired in 1968 — a champion again with Detroit — with 512 home runs, and entered the Hall of Fame in 1978, calling himself "just a beat-up old third baseman."
