About Ron Negray

Ron Negray, an Akron, Ohio right-hander, signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization in 1948 and announced himself in 1949 by going 21-6 with a 2.17 ERA for Class D Valdosta. A September 1952 call-up impressed manager Chuck Dressen, and Jackie Robinson gave the overlooked rookie his own World Series watch. Dealt to Philadelphia in June 1955 for Dave Cole and cash, Negray went 4-3 with a 3.52 ERA that year — including a five-hit complete-game win over Pittsburgh — then 2-3 in 1956. This card caught him at a turning point: on April 5, 1957, the Phillies traded him back to the Dodgers, and he spent that season at Triple-A St. Paul. In 1958 he made the transplanted Los Angeles Dodgers and pitched in relief in the April 15 opener at San Francisco, the first major-league game on the West Coast. He finished 6-6 with a 4.04 ERA, won 113 minor-league games, and died in 2018 at 88.
