Roy Smalley - 1957 Topps #397
1957 Topps #397 Roy Smalley

About Roy Smalley
Roy Frederick Smalley Jr. (1926-2011), a Springfield, Missouri native, signed with the Chicago Cubs at 17 in 1944 and reached the majors in 1948 after Navy service in World War II. A right-handed shortstop, he played for the Cubs (1948-1953), Milwaukee Braves (1954), and Philadelphia Phillies (1955-1958). His finest year was 1950, when he set career highs with 21 home runs and 85 RBIs and hit for the cycle on June 28 -- though he also led the National League in strikeouts, assists, and errors. Over 11 seasons he batted .227 with 61 home runs and 305 RBIs; he was never an All-Star and is not in the Hall of Fame. Cubs fans mocked his erratic arm with the chant "Miksis to Smalley to Addison Street," a parody of "Tinker to Evers to Chance." His son Roy Smalley III became a big-league All-Star shortstop, and his brother-in-law was longtime manager Gene Mauch.
