About the 1958 Baltimore Orioles

The 1958 Topps Baltimore Orioles team card, #408, reports the club's 1957 season: 76-76 under manager Paul Richards, fifth in the American League. It was the franchise's first non-losing year since 1945, when it was still the St. Louis Browns. Baltimore scored 597 runs and allowed 588, with a 3.46 team ERA, 13 shutouts, 25 saves and just 87 home runs, playing before 1,029,581 fans at Memorial Stadium. On the Topps side, the team cards were the first to carry series checklists on the back. Baltimore sits in Series Five, and this version lists the Series Six checklist in numerical order, the scarcer of the two backs; the other Orioles version lists the whole set alphabetically. Every version is printed #408.

The four Series-5 team cards each exist with two backs: an alphabetical roster (the base/common version) and a numerical Series-6 checklist. The numerical back is the recognized scarcer/premium version (PSA, 2017: Tigers and Orioles numerical backs each fewer than 10 in PSA 8, none higher). Which printed first is undocumented.

  • #408 — base card: the back lists the entire set ALPHABETICALLY (A-Z) — the base, more common version. — see the card page
