Johnson's 1958 Topps card is #266, part of Series Four, and shows him with the Baltimore Orioles. He was the Orioles' Opening Day starter that April and beat Washington 6-1 at Memorial Stadium. His last big league year finished 6-9 with a 3.88 ERA and 68 strikeouts in 26 games, 17 of them starts, after his 14-win 1957.

Connie Johnson, born Clifford Johnson Jr. in Stone Mountain, Georgia, in 1922, reached the majors at 30 after a long career in Black baseball. At 17 he was the youngest player selected for the Negro Leagues East-West game, and he pitched for the Kansas City Monarchs alongside Satchel Paige, winning the Negro Leagues' George Stovey Award as top pitcher in 1946 and earning the win in the 1950 East-West game. After Army service and a return to the Monarchs, he pitched in Canada in 1951, then at Colorado Springs, where he set a Western League record with 233 strikeouts in 1952. He debuted with the Chicago White Sox on April 17, 1953, becoming the first Black pitcher for the club. Traded to Baltimore in 1956, he had his best year in 1957 with 14 wins, a 3.20 ERA and 242 innings. He went 40-39 with a 3.44 ERA in five big league seasons, later pitching in Vancouver and Mexico. He died in 2004.
