The story on this card

Card #562 in the 1963 Topps set groups Cardinal with Dave McNally, Don Rowe and Ken Rowe under the Rookie Stars banner, part of the Series 7 high numbers. It is recognized as his rookie card, issued during his rookie season with the Houston Colt .45's, for whom he debuted that April against the Giants and made his only big-league start against the Dodgers before an early trip to Double-A that spring. Conrad 'Randy' Cardinal, a right-handed pitcher of Italian and Jewish descent from Valley Stream, New York, reached the majors with the 1963 Houston Colt .45's, striking out Willie Mays in his debut before a brief six-game career.

McNally's first Topps card is the four-man Rookie Stars issue #562, a series-7 high number that puts him alongside three other rookie pitchers from three other organizations: Randy Cardinal of the Houston Colt .45's, Don Rowe of the Mets and Ken Rowe of the Dodgers. His entire major-league resume going into 1963 was a single September start the autumn before, nine innings, two hits, no runs and the last 17 men he faced retired in order, for a 1-0 record and a 0.00 ERA. Dave McNally was Baltimore's durable left-hander, a three-time All-Star who won 20 games in four straight seasons from 1968 through 1971, shut out the Dodgers to clinch the 1966 World Series, and lent his name to the 1975 ruling that broke the reserve clause.

Card-back season: Rowe's rookie 1963 campaign with the New York Mets, appearing in 26 games out of the bullpen and posting a 4.28 ERA over 54 and two-thirds innings without ever earning a decision. It is a multi-player Rookie Stars subset entry, pairing Rowe with fellow rookies Randy Cardinal, Dave McNally and Ken Rowe, each representing a different club that year. A left-handed reliever who spent nine years in the minors before one season with the 1963 Mets, then built a long second career as a big league pitching coach.

Card 562 is a high-number Rookie Stars issue from the set's final print series, grouping Ken Rowe with Randy Cardinal, Dave McNally and Don Rowe as a high-number rookie card. It catches Rowe in his first big-league season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, for whom he made his debut that April, returned to Spokane in midseason, and came back in late July to help the club win the National League pennant, picking up his first major-league win in relief that September. A Michigan-born right-hander who logged just 26 relief innings in the majors for the Dodgers and Orioles, Ken Rowe went on to a decades-long coaching career, including two seasons as the Orioles' big-league pitching coach.
