1963 Topps #420 Bobby Richardson

About Bobby Richardson
Two Richardson cards run through this set. #173, the Bombers' Best combination card from the second series, puts him with Mickey Mantle and Tom Tresh, who had just been named American League Rookie of the Year - a Yankees showcase built around the biggest name in the game. His own solo card, #420, came later, in the fifth series, and landed in a hard summer: Richardson's father suffered a stroke in May and died on June 17, and he missed eleven games that season while helping his family. Collectors also sort two versions of #173, by whether the knob of the bat between Mantle's legs is visible.
Bobby Richardson was a second baseman who spent his entire twelve-year career with the New York Yankees, from 1955 through 1966. He signed out of Edmunds High School in Sumter, South Carolina, on the day he graduated, and broke in as a light-hitting reserve behind Billy Martin, Gil McDougald and Jerry Coleman before settling in as the regular second baseman in 1959, the year he hit .301. He teamed with shortstop Tony Kubek and third baseman Clete Boyer to form one of the sharpest infields of the era, winning five straight Gold Gloves from 1961 through 1965. A contact hitter who almost never struck out - 243 times in twelve seasons - he led the American League in at bats three times and in hits once, with 209 in 1962. He was an eight-time All-Star and played in seven World Series, batting .305 in them, and in 1960 he became the only World Series MVP ever chosen from the losing team, driving in a record twelve runs, six of them in a single game. He retired after the 1966 season, still only 31, to spend more time with his family, and later coached college baseball at South Carolina, Coastal Carolina and Liberty.
