The story on this card
Card 521, from series six, pairs the two men who shared Baltimore's first-base job in 1967 under the title Bird Bombers. Boog Powell had an off year that season, hitting .234 with 13 home runs as manager Hank Bauer cut his playing time, starting him in only 109 games. Curt Blefary, the 1965 American League Rookie of the Year, took over first base for much of the second half, splitting time between the outfield and first while batting .242 with 22 home runs and a career-high 81 RBIs. Both men were coming off the Orioles' 1966 World Series sweep of the Dodgers, and Topps grouped them as the club's home run threats even as their roles at first base shifted back and forth through the year. Both are shown representing the Baltimore Orioles.
Boog Powell - huge left-handed slugger who moved from left field to first base and became the power source of Baltimore's four pennant-winning lineups between 1966 and 1971, hitting alongside Frank and Brooks Robinson and taking the 1970 American League MVP Award. 1965 American League Rookie of the Year, Curt Blefary spent eight big-league seasons as a versatile outfielder, first baseman, and catcher, helping the Baltimore Orioles win the 1966 World Series before finishing his career with the Astros, Yankees, Athletics, and Padres.
