1967 Topps #382 Dave McNally

About Dave McNally
Solo card #382, a series-5 issue, follows the championship year. McNally went 13-6 with a 3.17 ERA over 213 innings and 33 starts in 1966, the most consistent starter on a staff that ran off with the pennant, and struck out 158. He then closed the World Series sweep of the Dodgers with a four-hit, 1-0 shutout in Game Four, Frank Robinson's home run supplying the only run of the afternoon and capping a record run of 33 and a third straight scoreless innings by Baltimore pitching.
Dave McNally was a left-handed pitcher who spent all but the final season of a fourteen-year career with the Baltimore Orioles, signed out of Billings, Montana in 1960 and debuting September 26, 1962 with a two-hit shutout of Kansas City. He won 20 or more games four straight years, 1968 through 1971; the 1971 Orioles, with Jim Palmer, Mike Cuellar and Pat Dobson, remain the last team to field four 20-game winners. A three-time All-Star (1969, 1970, 1972), he clinched the 1966 World Series sweep with a four-hit shutout of the Dodgers and, in 1970, became the only pitcher in major-league history to hit a World Series grand slam, off Cincinnati's Wayne Granger. He finished 184-119 with a 3.24 ERA and 1,512 strikeouts. Retired in June 1975 with the Expos, he lent his name to the grievance arbitrator Peter Seitz decided that December, breaking baseball's reserve clause. Baltimore put him in its team Hall of Fame in 1978; he died of cancer in his native Billings on December 1, 2002.
