About Hank Bauer
Topps opens the 1967 set with #1, "The Champs," standing Bauer between Frank Robinson and Brooks Robinson to mark the title; it was double-printed in series 1, so it turns up more readily than most. His solo #534 is a high number from the seventh series, and one of the 22 numbers doubled on those sheets. Between them sits a hard year: Frank Robinson's double vision after a collision, a battered staff, and a 76-85 finish level with Washington, 15 1/2 games back.
Henry Albert Bauer was born July 31, 1922, in East St. Louis, Illinois, and enlisted in the Marine Corps in January 1942. He fought across the Pacific with the 4th Raider Battalion and the 4th Marines, took shrapnel on Guam and again on Okinawa, and came home with two Purple Hearts, two Bronze Stars and eleven campaign ribbons. A Yankee scout signed him in 1946; he reached New York in September 1948 and spent twelve seasons as their right fielder, starting the All-Star Game in 1952, 1953 and 1954 and winning seven World Series rings. He hit safely in seventeen straight World Series games from 1956 through 1958, the longest such streak in World Series history. Traded to Kansas City after the 1959 season in the deal that brought Roger Maris to New York, Bauer turned manager, running clubs in Kansas City, Baltimore and Oakland across eight seasons, winning the 1966 World Series with Baltimore and taking two Sporting News Manager of the Year awards. Known as "Old Potato Face," he died February 9, 2007, in Lenexa, Kansas.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1967 Topps #534 card?
It is card #534 of the 609-card 1967 Topps Baseball set, picturing Hank Bauer of the Baltimore Orioles. This is one of the twenty manager cards in the 1967 Topps set - one for each of the twenty franchises.
Is 1967 Topps #534 a scarce card?
It is a high number card from the seventh and last print series, #534-609 - the scarce end of the set, holding both Hall of Fame rookies (Carew #569, Seaver #581). Twenty-two of the 76 are accepted double prints, so scarcity varies card by card inside the run. It is also a double print card (26 cards: #1, #30, #100, the #531 checklist and 22 high numbers). Cards printed twice on the sheet, so more plentiful than their neighbours: #1 The Champs, #30 Al Kaline, #100 Frank Robinson, the #531 seventh-series checklist, and 22 of the 76 high numbers (#534, 537, 539, 542, 547, 548, 550, 551, 554, 556, 559, 562, 564, 566, 569, 582, 588, 589, 596, 599, 601, 608), Carew #569 included. A high number that is also a double print is easier than its series suggests.
How many cards are in the 1967 Topps Baseball set?
609 cards, tracked as 624 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 609 without a gap - no number was skipped and none was used twice - and 15 cards carry catalogued print variations that the master set counts separately.
