The story on this card
Traded from Baltimore to Washington in late May 1967 for Pete Richert, Epstein became the Senators' everyday first baseman under manager Gil Hodges and homered in a grand slam against his old Orioles club, though he hit only .226 with 9 homers over the season. Card #204 is part of the multi-player Rookie Stars subset in the third print series, sharing the card with fellow Oriole Tom Phoebus; it is recognized as Epstein's rookie card. A Bronx-born slugging first baseman nicknamed "Super Jew," Epstein blossomed under manager Ted Williams in Washington before helping Oakland win the 1972 World Series championship.
Phoebus opened the season in the Orioles rotation and delivered his best all-around year, going 14-9 with a 3.33 ERA over 33 starts and 208 innings, leading Baltimore's staff in innings, starts, strikeouts and wins. In late May and early June he threw consecutive shutouts against New York, Boston and Washington. The Sporting News named him American League Rookie Pitcher of the Year. This card, a recognized rookie card, shares space with Mike Epstein in the multi-player Rookie Stars subset from the third print series. Baltimore-born right-hander who opened his September 1966 Orioles debut with two straight shutouts, then anchored the rotation for three seasons through the 1970 championship season.
