1970 Topps #533 Buzz Stephen

About Buzz Stephen
On October 15, 1968, the Seattle Pilots picked Stephen in the expansion draft, and on June 15, 1970, the Milwaukee Brewers sent him and Dick Baney to Baltimore for Dave May. His 1970 Topps card, #533 in the fifth series, still lists him with the Pilots, even though the franchise had moved to Milwaukee. It is a rookie card.
Buzz Stephen was a right-handed pitcher from Porterville, California, whose major league career consisted of two starts for the Minnesota Twins in September 1968. Louis Roberts Stephen stood 6 ft 4 in, weighed about 205 pounds, and attended Fresno State University. Houston drafted him in the 25th round in 1965 and he did not sign. The Twins took him in the first round of the 1966 June Secondary Phase draft, again without a contract, and signed him after selecting him in the second round of the January Secondary Phase. He debuted on September 20, 1968, and pitched his last game on September 25, finishing 1-1 with a 4.76 ERA and four strikeouts in 11 1/3 innings. He went hitless in three at-bats. He wore number 42 and earned $5,400 that season. He died on May 9, 2024, at age 79.
