1970 Topps #428 Don Buford

About Don Buford
Buford batted .272 in 1970 with 17 home runs and a career-high 109 walks. He led off for a Baltimore club that won 108 games. On April 9 he became the first Oriole to homer from both sides of the plate in one game, in a 13-1 win over Cleveland. He went 3-for-7 with a home run against Minnesota in the pennant series, then 4-for-15 in the World Series, including a homer in Game Three, a 9-3 win over the Reds. Card #428 comes from the fourth series.
Don Buford was a switch-hitting infielder-outfielder who broke in with the Chicago White Sox in 1963 after leading the International League in hitting at Indianapolis. Listed at 5-foot-7, he grew up in Southern California and starred in both football and baseball at USC before signing with Chicago. He spent his first five seasons shuttling between second and third base for the White Sox, drawing walks and running the bases well. Traded to Baltimore after the 1967 season, he began 1968 as a part-time second baseman until new manager Earl Weaver, hired that July, put him in the outfield and at leadoff. He led off for the Orioles through three straight pennant-winning seasons, scoring 99 runs in each of 1969, 1970 and 1971, and made his only All-Star team in 1971. He later played in Japan, worked as a personnel manager for Sears and returned to baseball as a manager and coach.
