1970 Topps #246 Jim McAndrew

About Jim McAndrew
McAndrew did not win a game in 1969 until June 24, after a flu shot left him sick late in spring training and his luggage was stolen on his arrival in New York. Once healthy in August he pitched six innings or better in nine straight starts, including back-to-back shutouts. Card #246, from the second series of the 1970 Topps set, lists him with the Mets.
Jim McAndrew was a right-handed pitcher born January 11, 1944, in Lost Nation, Iowa, the oldest of four children on a farm where his father raised chickens and grew corn. He played baseball and basketball at the University of Iowa and earned a psychology degree. The Mets drafted him in the 11th round of the 1965 draft. McAndrew debuted on July 21, 1968, filling in for Nolan Ryan against Bob Gibson and the Cardinals. Despite a hard-luck start in which the Mets were shut out in his first four appearances, he finished 4-7 with a 2.28 ERA as a rookie. He pitched for the Mets from 1968 through 1973, in a rotation that included Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman. He was a member of the 1969 World Series champions and the 1973 National League pennant winners, though he did not pitch in either Series. After the 1973 season the Mets traded him to the San Diego Padres, and he closed out his career there in 1974. He finished with a 37-53 record and a 3.65 ERA over 161 games.
