About Jim Stewart

Cincinnati took Stewart in the Rule 5 draft on December 2, 1968, and he hit .253 in 119 games for the 1969 Reds, 66 of them in the outfield. He was one of the backups who called themselves the Red Raiders. His #636 is a high number from the seventh series and lists him with Cincinnati.

James Franklin Stewart was a switch-hitting utility infielder-outfielder who spent ten major league seasons, 1963 to 1973, with the Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds and Houston Astros. Signed by the Cubs out of Austin Peay State College, where he had starred in baseball, basketball and track, he broke in with Chicago in September 1963 and logged his busiest season there in 1964. He played every position but pitcher, earning the nickname Super Sub with the Reds for his willingness to fill in anywhere. He appeared in the 1970 National League Championship Series and World Series for Cincinnati, closing out his playing days with Houston in 1972 and 1973. He finished with a .237 career average over 777 games, then spent decades afterward as a minor league manager and major league scout for the Reds and Phillies.
