1970 Topps #419 Ron Taylor

About Ron Taylor
Taylor earned the win in the Mets' first Opening Day victory, a 5-3, eleven-inning game at Forbes Field on April 7. He retired all six Pirates he faced before Donn Clendenon's two-run pinch-hit single in the eleventh put New York ahead. Taylor finished the season with 13 saves and a 3.93 ERA in 57 relief appearances. Topps #419 is his fourth-series Mets card.
Toronto-born right-hander Ron Taylor pitched for Cleveland, St. Louis, Houston, the Mets and San Diego during eleven major-league seasons from 1962 through 1972. He finished 45-43 with a 3.93 ERA and 72 saves. He struck out 464 batters in 800 innings. Of his 491 appearances, 474 came in relief. Taylor won championships with the 1964 Cardinals and 1969 Mets and allowed no hits in seven World Series innings. He combined baseball with two professions. While pitching in Cleveland's farm system, he earned an electrical engineering degree from the University of Toronto in 1961. After leaving baseball, he returned to the university for medical school, graduating in 1977. He became the Blue Jays' team physician in 1979 and served for more than three decades. The Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame inducted him in 1985, followed by Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 1993. Taylor died in Toronto on June 16, 2025, at 87.
