The story on this card
Brooks spent all of 1971 in Triple-A Iowa after again being the last player cut from Oakland's spring camp. He batted .272 with 23 home runs, led the American Association with 83 walks and made its All-Star Game, despite a month lost to a broken hand from a May 24 pitch. The Athletics won 101 games and the AL West without recalling him in September. His #633 card, from the fifth series, is a Rookie Stars triple printed with Pete Koegel of the Brewers, whose rookie card it is, and Scott Northey of the Royals. Bobby Brooks, a 5-foot-8 outfielder, hit .231 with five home runs in 55 games for the Athletics and Angels between 1969 and 1973. He led the 1969 Southern League in homers and runs, and a Harbor City ball field carries his name.
Koegel opened 1971 with the Brewers and was a Phillie after April 22, playing 14 games between the two clubs, seven of them at catcher. His Topps card is #633, a Rookie Stars card in the fifth series shared with Bobby Brooks of the Athletics and Scott Northey of the Royals. Koegel is printed with the Brewers, and it is his rookie card. Pete Koegel, a 6-foot-6 right-handed hitting catcher, first baseman and outfielder, played 62 games for the Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies between 1970 and 1972, the last of them in Philadelphia.
His 1971 card is #633, a three-man Rookie Stars card from the fifth series, listing him with Kansas City alongside Bobby Brooks of the Oakland Athletics and Pete Koegel of the Milwaukee Brewers. Koegel's appearance there is his first Topps card. The 1969 line behind it included 11 runs scored, two doubles and two triples. Scott Northey, son of outfielder Ron Northey, played 20 games for the 1969 Kansas City Royals, batting .262 with 16 hits, including a three-run homer off Gary Peters on September 28, then played in the minors through 1972.
