About Tom Phoebus
Phoebus went 3-11 with a 4.46 ERA for San Diego in 1971, working 133 1/3 innings. He made 21 starts in 29 games, and the Padres used him exclusively in relief after July. His 1972 Topps card is #477, in the fourth series, and carries the Padres name. In April 1972 San Diego sent him to the Cubs.
Tom Phoebus was a right-handed pitcher who spent seven seasons in the majors, 1966 to 1972, most of them with the Baltimore Orioles. A Baltimore native who signed with the Orioles for a $10,000 bonus after high school, he debuted in September 1966 by throwing shutouts in each of his first two starts, becoming the fourth American League pitcher to do so. He led the Orioles staff in innings, starts, strikeouts and victories in 1967 and threw a no-hitter against the Red Sox on April 27, 1968. In the 1970 World Series he won Game Two in relief as Baltimore beat Cincinnati. Traded to San Diego after the 1970 season, he closed his career with the Padres and Chicago Cubs in 1972. He finished 56-52 with a 3.33 ERA and 725 strikeouts, then taught grade-school physical education in Florida. He died in 2019 at age 77.
