The story on this card

Bumbry made his Baltimore debut as a pinch hitter on September 5, 1972, and finished the season 4-for-11 (.364) in nine games. His 1973 Topps #614, from the fifth series, grouped him with Dwight Evans of Boston and Charlie Spikes of Cleveland. It was the rookie card for all three. Baltimore Orioles center fielder and leadoff hitter, 1973 American League Rookie of the Year and a 1980 All-Star. Vietnam veteran and Bronze Star recipient, he batted .281 with 254 steals and won the 1983 World Series.

Rookies card #614 puts Evans on a three-man card from the fifth series, a high number, with Alonza Bumbry of the Orioles and Charlie Spikes of the Indians; it is a rookie card for all three. Evans was Boston's regular right fielder in 1973 and played 119 games. He hit .223 with 10 home runs and 32 RBIs. The Red Sox gave him number 24 that year. Dwight Evans was a Boston Red Sox right fielder from 1972 to 1990, an eight-time Gold Glove winner with a strong arm. He hit 385 home runs, made three All-Star teams and was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2000.

Spikes came to Cleveland in the November 27, 1972 trade that sent Graig Nettles to the Yankees. Coached by Rocky Colavito, he led the 1973 Indians with 23 home runs and 73 RBI. He hit .237 and also led the team with 103 strikeouts. His rookie card, #614 in the fifth, high-number series, is the Rookie Outfielders trio with Alonza Bumbry of the Orioles and Dwight Evans of the Red Sox; Spikes is printed with Cleveland. Charlie Spikes, the Bogalusa Bomber, was a power-hitting outfielder who led Cleveland in home runs in 1973 and 1974, then pinch-hit for the 1979 Braves, sharing the major league lead in pinch hits.
