1973 Topps #533 Larry Stahl

About Larry Stahl
On September 2, 1972, at Wrigley Field, Milt Pappas had retired 26 straight Padres and had a 2-2 count on pinch hitter Larry Stahl when umpire Bruce Froemming called the next two pitches balls, walking him. Pappas got his no-hitter on the next batter. Stahl hit .226 with 7 home runs in 107 games that year, and Cincinnati bought his contract on December 1. Card #533 is a high number from the fifth series and lists him with the Reds.
Larry Stahl was a left-handed hitting outfielder who spent ten seasons in the majors from 1964 to 1973 with the Kansas City Athletics, New York Mets, San Diego Padres, and Cincinnati Reds. Signed by the Athletics as an amateur free agent in 1960, he debuted in September 1964 and grew into a semi-regular outfielder in Kansas City. He then moved to the Mets and, through the 1968 expansion draft, to San Diego, where he had his best season in 1971, batting .253 with eight home runs. Used increasingly as a pinch hitter later in his career, Stahl became Cincinnati's top man off the bench in 1973, helping the Reds win the National League West and appearing in that year's NLCS against the Mets. After his playing days he returned to his hometown of Belleville, Illinois, where he worked in the coal industry and owned a local tavern.
