1974 Topps #535 Bob Tolan

About Bob Tolan
Bobby Tolan's 1973 in Cincinnati went badly: he hit .206 with 9 home runs and 51 RBI, clashed with management, went AWOL for two days in August and broke team rules by growing a beard. He was traded to San Diego, which is the team on his 1974 Topps card, #535. The players' union filed a grievance for him, and he learned during 1974 that he had won it.
Bobby Tolan broke into the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1965 as a left-handed hitting outfielder, serving as a reserve on the pennant-winning 1967 and 1968 clubs before the Cardinals traded him and reliever Wayne Granger to the Reds for Vada Pinson. Handed the everyday center field job, Tolan hit .305 in 1969 and followed with a career year in 1970, batting .316 and leading the National League with 57 stolen bases as the Reds won the pennant. An Achilles injury cost him the 1971 season, but he returned in 1972 to win both the Comeback Player of the Year award and the Hutch Award. Later stops took him to the Padres, Phillies and Pirates, and after a season in Japan with the Nankai Hawks he closed his career with San Diego in 1979. He finished with a .265 average, 86 home runs and 497 RBI. In 1,282 games he also stole 193 bases.
