About New York Yankees
The 1975 Yankees played their home games at Shea Stadium while Yankee Stadium underwent renovation, and new owner George Steinbrenner opened the winter by signing ace Catfish Hunter as a free agent and trading longtime favorite Bobby Murcer to San Francisco for slugger Bobby Bonds. Thurman Munson hit .318 with 102 RBI, Graig Nettles supplied 21 homers at third, and Chris Chambliss and Roy White anchored the rest of the lineup, but the pitching behind Hunter never stabilized. Bill Virdon, fresh off winning the 1974 AL Manager of the Year award, led the club to a 53-51 start before Steinbrenner fired him on August 1 in favor of Billy Martin, who went 30-26 down the stretch. New York finished 83-77, third in the AL East, 12 games behind the pennant-winning Boston Red Sox.
