1975 Topps #183 Mel Stottlemyre

About Mel Stottlemyre
Melvin Leon Stottlemyre signed with the Yankees for no bonus in June 1961 after a scout discovered him pitching in Washington's Yakima Valley, following his days at Mabton High School and Yakima Valley Community College. He posted a league-best 1.42 ERA at Triple-A Richmond before a midseason call-up in 1964, going 9-3 down the stretch to help New York capture its fifth straight pennant, then squaring off with Bob Gibson three times in the World Series - beating him in Game Two before losing the decisive Game Seven. A workhorse right-hander on a Yankees club mired in mediocrity through the late 1960s and early 1970s, Stottlemyre won 20 games three times (1965, 1968, 1969) and made five All-Star teams; his 40 career shutouts matched Sandy Koufax's total. A torn rotator cuff ended his career in 1974, and the Yankees released him before 1975 - making card #183 his final Topps issue as a player. He later won five World Series rings as a pitching coach with the 1986 Mets and Joe Torre's Yankees dynasty.
