About Bobby Bonds

Bobby Bonds broke into the majors with the San Francisco Giants on June 25, 1968, launching a grand slam in his third at-bat of his debut game — the first modern-era player to homer with the bases loaded in his first game — and was named to the Topps All-Star Rookie Team. Over seven seasons in San Francisco he became the sport's premier power-speed threat, headlined by 1973: 39 home runs, 43 stolen bases, All-Star Game MVP, third in NL MVP voting, and Sporting News NL Player of the Year. He and son Barry are the only players with five 30-homer/30-steal seasons. After 1974 the Giants traded him to the New York Yankees for Bobby Murcer, and his lone 1975 season in pinstripes — the year pictured on this card — brought a third All-Star nod, 32 homers, 30 steals, and a new major-league record for career leadoff home runs. He went on to play for eight teams in eight years, immortalized in the lyric "Bobby Bonds can play for everyone," before retiring with 332 homers, 461 steals, and three Gold Gloves. He later coached Barry with the Giants and died in 2003; he is not enshrined in Cooperstown.
