About Thurman Munson

Drafted fourth overall by the Yankees out of Kent State in 1968, Thurman Munson reached the majors in August 1969 and by 1970 was the starting catcher, batting .302 to win American League Rookie of the Year. Over 11 seasons in New York he made seven All-Star teams, won three straight Gold Gloves (1973-75), and captured the 1976 AL MVP award the same year Steinbrenner insisted he be named Yankees captain — the first since Lou Gehrig. Munson's bat and glove anchored three straight pennants (1976-78) and back-to-back championships in 1977 and 1978, finishing with a .292 average, 113 home runs and 701 RBIs. Teammates called him "Squatty Body," a name that stuck not for his crouch behind the plate but for his thick, low-slung build. On August 2, 1979, at the height of his career, Munson was killed practicing landings in his private jet at age 32; the Yankees retired his No. 15 and dedicated a plaque in Monument Park. His 1975 Topps card, issued the year before he earned the captaincy, remains one of the set's most sought star cards.
