1975 Topps #21 Rollie Fingers

About Rollie Fingers
Roland Glen Fingers signed with the Kansas City Athletics for a $13,000 bonus on Christmas Eve 1964, turning down a bigger offer from the Dodgers, and reached Oakland in 1968. By the early 1970s he had become the game's premier fireman, anchoring the Athletics' bullpen through three straight World Series titles (1972-74) and earning MVP honors in the 1974 Series with a win and three saves. His 1975 Topps card catches him mid-dynasty, All-Star flag included for a third straight season. His handlebar mustache, grown for a $300 bonus Charlie Finley offered as a promotional stunt, made him the face of the "Mustache Gang." Traded to San Diego in 1977, he led the majors in saves twice, then joined Milwaukee in 1981 and turned in one of the great relief seasons ever: a 1.04 ERA and 28 saves that won him both the Cy Young and AL MVP awards, one of only a handful of pitchers to sweep both. He retired in 1985 with what was then a record 341 saves and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1992, the second reliever so honored.
